Xiaohongshu Download Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

What's the most common cause of a failed download?
Most failures come down to one of two things: the link wasn't copied correctly, or the post itself isn't accessible. Work through the checks below in order, starting with what you can verify yourself before assuming anything is broken on RedSave's end.
1. Is the link actually HTTPS?
Confirm the link you pasted starts with https://. If the address looks truncated, or extra text got copied along with it, go back to Xiaohongshu and use its Share function to copy the link fresh rather than editing the pasted text by hand.
2. Try re-copying the share link
Open the post again, tap Share, copy the link, and paste it into the RedSave input box. Supported formats are https://xhslink.com/..., https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/..., and https://www.xiaohongshu.com/board/....
3. Is the post public and does it actually contain a video?
Private, deleted, access-restricted, and login-required posts can't be processed. Also confirm you're linking to a post that actually contains a video, rather than a text- or photo-only post. 4. Still failing? Wait and try again
If the link is correctly formatted and the post is public, but the fetch still fails, wait a moment and try again. Temporary outages on the extraction side aren't something RedSave can fix directly from your end.
When can't RedSave fix this at all?
If a post has been deleted or switched to private, requires special access, or the extraction service it depends on is briefly unavailable, the download simply can't go through — no workaround exists on RedSave's side for those cases. For security reasons, RedSave also doesn't expose internal provider names or system-level error details.
What are my rights to the content I download?
RedSave is a tool for viewing and saving public posts — it doesn't hold rights to the content itself. Only process videos you have permission to save or use, and respect the original creator's copyright and the platform's terms of service. “Xiaohongshu download not working” is really two separate problems
That phrase usually covers two different failure points. The first is a fetch failure — you tap Fetch and get an error before any preview even loads, which is what the steps above are for. The second is a download failure — the preview loads fine, but tapping the download button doesn't actually save a file. Figuring out which one you're hitting narrows down the cause much faster than troubleshooting both at once.
The preview loads but the download button does nothing — what now?
If the video preview or photo grid displays correctly but the download itself doesn't go through, the original file URL may be temporarily unresponsive. Re-fetching the same post often resolves this, since it requests a freshly issued file address. It's also worth checking whether your browser is blocking multiple file downloads at once, since some browsers silently suppress a second or third download triggered in quick succession.
Does the cause differ by device?
A “fetch failure” can have a different root cause depending on your device. iPhone users often miss the clipboard permission prompt that appears the first time an app requests paste access. Android users more commonly run into this because the link was opened inside Xiaohongshu's in-app browser, which limits some functionality compared to a full browser. For device-specific detail, there isn't a dedicated English guide yet, but the flow itself — copy link, paste into RedSave, download — is identical across iPhone, Android, and desktop.
Does a VPN or region setting affect fetching?
RedSave itself doesn't check your location or block requests by region, so a VPN generally isn't the cause of a fetch failure on RedSave's side. That said, some corporate or school networks route traffic through filters that block requests to Xiaohongshu's domains outright, which looks identical to a normal fetch failure from RedSave's side even though the actual block is happening upstream on the network. If a link fails only on one particular network — say, an office Wi-Fi — but works fine on mobile data, that's a strong sign the network itself is the blocker rather than the link or the post. Switching to a different network, or trying again later from home, is usually a faster fix than troubleshooting the link itself in that situation.
Why doesn't RedSave just tell me the exact technical error?
RedSave intentionally shows a simplified message instead of raw system output. Exposing internal provider names or stack traces wouldn't actually help most people fix the problem, and it can leak details that are better kept out of a public-facing error message. The ordered checklist above — link format, post visibility, video presence, then a retry — covers the overwhelming majority of real failures without needing that internal detail, and it works whether the underlying cause turns out to be a copy-paste mistake, a private post, or a brief outage on the provider's side.
